CHAPTER SIX

Neither Victor nor Oliver were artistic enough to come up with their own ring design, but Victor was a very wealthy man with a lot of bizarre connections. One of those happened to be the well-known jeweler hired for Victor’s first wedding. Charls was an artist with a reputation for creating unique pieces, and he also happened to live in Providence.

He tried not to see it as a sign of luck, but Victor was starting to feel like he and Oliver really were destined to be together.

Victor wanted something simple because that was the sort of man he was. He wanted a ring that fit comfortably over his knobby knuckles and wouldn’t bend easily if it was crushed between his body and the ground during a fall.

Oliver stated he planned to keep wearing his engagement ring, so for him, they needed to design something that worked with the one he already had on.

Charls, luckily, already had ideas, and he made Victor one promise—a vow to scrap anything close to the first designs. That had settled Victor’s nerves and solidified the contract. They’d been waiting almost five months now to see what Charls had come up with, and it felt like a good way to celebrate because Oliver was right, the day felt like one to celebrate.

They pulled up to the shop, and Victor nodded at the valet who approached, offering his hand out for the keys. He debated with himself for a long moment, then tested his balance without reaching into the back for his crutches.

He might regret it. He’d been on them exclusively for the last year. But he wanted to take the risk. He wanted to hold Oliver’s hand for this, and he knew if he fell, his angel would catch him. Maybe they’d hit the ground together, but that’s how it was with them.

All things together.

“Babe,” Oliver said, sounding exasperated.

Victor’s legs felt strong for the moment. The surgery and injections had done their job, and he knew he was walking unaided on borrowed time as his body aged, but he was taking these small triumphs, and he was done being afraid to let go for a little while.

“I’m okay. Let me hold your hand.”

Oliver rolled his eyes, but he offered his out, and Victor took it, kissing his palm, his wrist, his fingertips before holding him tightly. “You feel steady?”

Victor took a few tentative steps forward. His feet shuffled more than they used to, but his spams were calm for now. “I do.”

Oliver swung their hands gently between them as they made their way inside. The shop was on the third floor, so they took the narrow elevator up, and Victor swayed a little as they stepped out. Oliver was at his side instantly—a ballast until he was solid again.

“This place is wild,” Oliver said, glancing out the window. It overlooked the Providence, the late-afternoon sun glinting off the dark waters. It was beautiful in its sort of old-world charm—neighborhoods less than a mile away unkempt and sort of wild.
